CREATIVE WRITING at BARNETT'S
Barnett's welcomes and encourages writers of all genres and experience - from established authors to those who simply feel an urge to explore their creative side!
From time to time, Barnett's hosts creative writing workshops and short courses. Attendance is limited to ensure that all participants are able to benefit from the experience of the course leader and develop as part of the group.
November 2024 - "Writing about the Natural World"
Following the success of last autumn's creative writing course, led by author and environmental contributor, Sarah Jane Butler, we are delighted to have Sarah back at Barnett's to lead a 4-week exploration of writing about nature.
This promises to be a relaxed and friendly introduction to writing about the natural world, from mountain peak to crack in the pavement. We’ll explore place and nature writing in fiction and non-fiction and look for our own voices. All are welcome, whether you’re a complete beginner or have been writing for a while.

The course consists of four 2-hour workshops at a total cost of £100.
Tuesday 5 / 12 / 19 / 26 November, 7pm to 9pm, "Upstairs at Barnett's"

Sarah is a writer of fiction and non-fiction. Her novel, Starling, was published in 2022 and was the subject of a very interesting Barnett's Literary Lounge. She is currently writing a book about rivers and the ways people live with them.

“Sarah Jane Butler writes with a visceral lyricism: she doesn’t so much observe the natural world as plunge us into its ditches, woods and rivers.”
(Judith Heneghan, author of Snegurochka)
"Writing short stories"
with Sarah Jane Butler
October 2023
This four-week programme, led by award-winning Sussex writer Sarah Jane Butler, offered a friendly and relaxed series of workshops exploring the art of short story writing - open to all, from beginner to experienced writers. Each week, in our cosy room Upstairs at Barnett's, the group explored a selection of classic and modern short stories, trying out different approaches and sharing their writing amongst the group.
